An international consortium of research organisations from China, India, and Russia, including HSE University’s Faculty of Urban and Regional Development represented by experts from the Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urban Studies and Planning and the Centre for Social Research and Technological Innovation (CITY), is developing an index of technological and spatial urban development (the Urban & Innovation Environment Index). Recently, a list of the top 10 largest cities of the BRICS countries was published on the project’s website. The Russian capital took the first place in the ranking, followed by Beijing, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, and Guangzhou.

On June 4, HSE University’s Faculty of Urban and Regional Development met with representatives of Kunshan Industrial Technology Research Institute (KSITRI, China) in the HSE University building on Pokrovsky Bulvar. The faculty management and the Chinese delegation discussed the development of project, scientific, technical and educational cooperation.
Every year, students who have just finished their second year of the Bachelor’s in Urban Planning of the Faculty of Urban and Regional Development (FURD) at HSE University undertake field work in various Russian regions. They get to know more about cities in detail, learn to identify what’s typical and unique about them, and apply primary data collection methods. This July, the students’ field studies took place in cities in the Urals.
Winners from Russia, Syria, Germany and Kazakhstan will be given a 50%, 30% and 20% discount on tuition fee for the international Master's programme 'Prototyping future cities' at the HSE University in Moscow.
On 26 April, students and specialists from Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, Germany, Ghana, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Nigeria, Pakistan, United States, South Africa, Syria, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Russia participated in the international online contest PFC Global Scholarship Competition.
On 1 and 2 February students from Moscow, Saint-Petersburg and Voronezh took part in Shukhov Lab Winter School ‘Face recognition in the city’. Within two days participants with Architecture, Urban Informatics, Sociology and Social Informatics, Soil Science, Political Science and Economics backgrounds created face recognition spoofing tool.
Daria Klimova, a graduate of the international master's programme ‘Prototyping future cities’ and a fellow of the grant of the President of the Republic of Tatarstan, presented the concept of revitalizing the territory of the ‘Santekhpribor’ industrial enterprise at the II Russian Youth Architectural Biennale in Kazan.
On October 21 in Skolkovo, within the framework of the Open Innovations forum, Vicente Guallart took part in a panel discussion on the topic ‘Technologies as a brand. How does a city become a superstar?’
On October 21, the chief architect of Moscow Sergey Kuznetsov and the head of Shukhov Lab Vicente Guallart, delivered the introductory lecture of the ‘Moscow 2050’ workshop in the laboratory. Within two weeks the selected participants of the workshop together with students of the Master's programme ‘Prototyping future cities’, will develop a vision of Moscow 2050 for the pavilion at the Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism 2019 in Shenzhen.
