How can ‘Polina’ help you steer a yacht? Should we demonise plastic? Why does game development have nine circles of hell? What happens when we move our eyes while reading? Answers to all these questions could be found in the ‘Intellect’ space organised by HSE University at VK FEST, where it was the only university to take part in the festival in Moscow.

Associate Professor Kirill Puzanov of the HSE Vysokovsky Graduate School of Urbanism and HSE University Professor Oleg Baevskiy have held lectures at the Red Square Book festival. They talked about perceptions of the city, its private and public aspects, chamber and representative spaces, and imaginary (or ‘vernacular’) areas. The open lectures took place as part of the HSE University Open to the City project.

HSE University has placed 66th in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022, which assess universities younger than 50 years old. The THE Young University Ranking is the first in a series of global rankings to be published in 2022.

FURD researchers Karine Nikogosyan and Diana Kodzokova in cooperation with researchers from HSE University and St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (SPSUACE) used eye tracking to study how residents who own cars and those who don’t look at the shared courtyards of multistorey apartment buildings.

The student research expedition of the Graduate School of Urbanism has concluded its field work in the Sovetsko-Gavansky region. The data collected will form the basis of a booklet about the main features of the region’s urban space. Other outcomes of the expedition include a preprint of a research publication and the creation a systematized database with metadata on collection methodology.

SIBUR Circularity School for plastic recycling and sustainable design has taken place in Shukov Lab in partnership with zerowaste.lab and Russian petrochemicals company Sibur. We spoke with its organizers and students who shared with us the details of the intensive two-week training, the most exciting and inspiring things they have learnt in the process, as well as results and prospects.

Higher School of Economics has hosted the 5th annual conference “Sustainable Development of Russian Cities: New Strategic Vision”, which took place on February 17th. The representatives of city administrations, international organizations and businesses, as well as Russian and foreign experts have discussed new challenges for urban development and mechanisms of sustainable development on the regional level.

Researchers from HSE University conducted a study of 15 of the world’s largest cities in Europe, Asia, and North America that assessed the cities’ labour market activity, post-quarantine economic recoveries, and the extent to which their digital infrastructures were prepared for the crisis. The study showed that Seoul and Shanghai, followed by Moscow, dealt with the crisis most effectively. Singapore and Stockholm ranked 4^th and 5^th, respectively.

Winners from Russia, Syria, Germany and Kazakhstan will be given a 50%, 30% and 20% discount on tuition fee for the international Master's programme 'Prototyping future cities' at the HSE University in Moscow.
